“We were in a very strong position. We had all the money, the money didn’t come from Hollywood, it came from record companies and rock stars like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Elton John. We were in a strong position, so there was no interference. The film went out and did exceedingly well so that really started us off. I remember in New York when we came down in the morning and discovered there was a queue around the theatre already in the morning for the show in the afternoon. It was an immediate success, maybe not in Hollywood terms, but certainly by our standards.”

“My wife says I keep making the same film, I just change the costumes! It was only after the event that I started to think there was a connection between all of those films. One’s based on a kid, the other’s a young man and the other is an old man. They?re all escaping: the kid’s escaping into the worlds of the books he reads, Sam is escaping into juvenile dreams rather than taking responsibility for what he’s doing in his life and subsequently punished, and Munchausen is just a great liar. I always thought that lies being more important than the facts was an important idea to put across.”

Was Jonathan Pryce’s character a reflection of yourself at the time, being frustrated by the system? “Well I’m not even going to comment on that, I don’t know where it comes from. Actually, it comes from the web, I spotted that first on the web. It’s the great rumour machine of the world. It’s like old ladies talking over the garden wall while they’re hanging out their clothes. That’s what the web has become and everyone has become an old lady - full of crap! I just let it run, I don’t care! Colin’s brilliant and I’d love to work with Colin. I can’t say anything about the casting at the moment because we’re just starting that process, but Colin I would never say no to. That’s a good rumour!”
