What is the meaning to the poem in 1984?
In George Orwell’s book 1984 there is a poem that goes like this

Oranges and lemons, say the bells of St. Clements’s,
You owe me three fartherlings, say the bells of St.Martins’s,
When will you pay me? say the the bells of Old Bailey,
When I grow rich, say the bells of Shoreditch

This poem has confused me for some time now. i thought that the meaning would become clean at the begging of the book but it has not. this isn’t a question for class but I am a very curious as to why Orwell put this in the book and what it means. I understand there must be many different interpretations but I would like to have some ideas what it means.

also i just realized this, i believe that the actual last line is this

Here comes a candle to light you bed, here comes the chopper to chop off your head

Oranges and lemons is a term of derision; it doesn’t mean anything of significance.

The bells of St. Martins could be calling the faithful and nagging them to help pay for the completion of the church.

The Old Bailey was main courthouse and one time prison in London. "When will you pay me?" could refer to paying for your crimes.

"Here comes a candle to light you bed, here comes the chopper to chop off your head" was an old nursery rhyme.

hope that helps some.
