Cleaning Hardwood Floors?
I recently moved into a 60’s era house, and have beveled, pegged hardwood floors in a 24′ x 14′ room. The bevels are about 1/16", and the boards vary in width from 3" to 6". The hardwood is very dirty… looks like it’s never once been cleaned. The bevels in between the planks are black from dirt, and only come clean from scrubbing or using a flathead screwdriver to scrape it out. There is also some sort of adhesive (skid resistant carpet backing, I think) in a small square pattern in the center of the floor. Paint thinner or mineral spirits doesn’t bring it up, and sand paper gums up when I try to lightly sand it off.
I’ve tried scrubbing with a deck brush with warm water, mopping several times, paint thinner, and warm water & soap. Nothing is helping with the little squares, and I want to make sure they’re gone before I polyurethane. Any ideas / help is greatly appreciated!
Wow - this is a problem - go to a DIY store and see if anyone there can help or if you can browse through the hardwood cleaning stuff to find something. I would recommend WD40 - oil and adhesive don’t mix & it should help to loosen it so you can scrub it off. Murphy’s Oil soap might do the trick, too. As for cleaning the grooves - I would just keep using the screw driver to scrape out the crud. But I would wrap the screw driver in a soft cloth or several layers of paper towel to avoid damaging the wood

Try using a bit of heat, like from a hair dryer. DON"T use a heat gun, like one designed to lift paint, unless you want to completely sand and refinish the floor.
Otherwise, try a bit of Goo Gone - it’s a commercial product designed to get rid of sticky residue from labels, etc. I suspect it’s basically lamp or maybe fuel oil, with a fair amount of perfume to make it smell better.

I used vinegar & water to remove carpet backing stuck to the wood and it worked great, even cleaned the area as well. After that, I only use Ammonia mix for super tough stains and good old fashioned "Murphy’s Oil Soap" for everyday cleaning.

When I used to refinish hardwood we used a 3DS Sander, a belt sander and slowly sand it down until smooth and level but you can always try a heat gun to melt the adhesive that is in the grooves if you don’t want to sand the floor right down…The heat should work well without damaging the floor.
